Uluwatu Weddings

Uluwatu is Bali's clifftop wedding country. Private villas and estates line the limestone cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula, with the Indian Ocean below and the sun setting over the water at many west-facing venues.

We're based just up the road in Jimbaran, and Uluwatu is where many of our weddings happen, at venues like Villa Plenilunio, The Surga Villa Estate, Villa Pemutih and Pandawa Cliff Estate. They range from intimate villa dinners for around 10 guests to estate receptions for 200 guests or more.

This guide covers what we tell couples who are deciding on Uluwatu: who it suits, what to plan around, and the venues we know well.

Is Uluwatu right for your wedding?

Uluwatu suits couples who want an ocean-view ceremony and a private venue where their guests can stay together. It's less suited to couples picturing jungle scenery, rice fields or a ceremony directly on the sand.

Uluwatu suits you if:

  • You want a ceremony overlooking the ocean, ideally timed around sunset.

  • You'd like exclusive use of a villa or estate, with your closest people staying on site.

  • You want the whole day in one place, from getting ready through to the ceremony, dinner and party.

  • You're happy for guests to stay nearby in Uluwatu or Jimbaran rather than in Seminyak or Canggu.

Look elsewhere if:

  • You want greenery, rice terraces or a jungle river. See our Ubud and East Coast Bali Weddings guide.

  • You want a beachfront wedding with restaurants, beach clubs and nightlife nearby. See our Canggu and Seminyak guide.

  • You want to say your vows directly on the sand. Most Uluwatu venues sit on the cliffs above the beach, and access to the beaches below can involve steep steps.

  • Many of your guests have limited mobility. Cliff paths, steps and uneven ground are common, so we check access at each venue before recommending it.

Practical considerations for an Uluwatu wedding

Season

Most couples marry here between April and October, during Bali's dry season. July and August are particularly busy, so if you're planning a peak-season wedding we suggest securing your venue 12 to 18 months ahead. Weddings are possible during the wetter months too, but a suitable rain plan is essential.

Sunset timing

Sunset shifts by around 40 minutes across the year, from approximately 6:06 pm in late May to 6:47 pm in late January. The best ceremony time depends on the venue's orientation and the light on your wedding date. We plan the schedule so you have time for the ceremony, photographs and sunset drinks without rushing through the day.

Wind on the cliffs

Clifftop venues can catch strong ocean breezes, particularly in the afternoon. We take this into account when choosing the ceremony position and planning the styling, using secure floral arrangements and enclosed candle holders where needed. Long veils, loose hair and lightweight table decorations also need consideration.

A rain plan, even in dry season

Many clifftop lawns have little natural cover. For every Uluwatu wedding, we agree on a wet-weather layout with the venue in advance, whether that's a covered terrace, an indoor space or a marquee where permitted. The backup needs to accommodate your guest numbers and reception layout, not just the ceremony.

Getting there

Allow around 40 to 60 minutes by car from the airport to Uluwatu, depending on traffic and the exact venue. Some villas have narrow access roads that aren't suitable for large coaches, so we arrange appropriate minibus shuttles and plan transfers around the expected traffic.

Where your guests stay

Most villas can sleep the wedding party and closest family. Other guests usually stay at nearby resorts and hotels in Uluwatu or Jimbaran, and we'll suggest options within a practical transfer distance of the venue.

Music curfews

Music restrictions vary by venue and can depend on the type of entertainment and local requirements. Amplified music often needs to finish around 11 pm, although some venues allow later celebrations under specific conditions. If a late finish matters to you, tell us early and we'll factor it into the venues we shortlist.

Uluwatu wedding venues

The Surga Villa Estate, Ungasan

A clifftop estate comprising two villas with 13 suites between them, allowing your wedding party to stay together on site. The infinity pool provides a striking setting for an outdoor ceremony, with ocean views as the backdrop. The estate can accommodate up to 125 guests, depending on the event setup. It's open to the cliff edge, so we confirm the ceremony position and the wet-weather arrangements early.

Villa Plenilunio, Uluwatu

A clifftop villa overlooking the Indian Ocean, with traditional Javanese joglo structures and tropical gardens. It suits couples looking for a private villa wedding with dramatic ocean views and space for a larger celebration. The estate has 10 bedrooms sleeping up to 20 guests, with capacity for up to 200 guests for a seated dinner or 300 for a standing reception. With that much space, we plan how guests move from the ceremony to dinner and onto the dance floor, so the evening never loses momentum.

Pandawa Cliff Estate, Kutuh

A clifftop estate overlooking the Indian Ocean and Pandawa Beach, comprising several private villas with landscaped lawns, outdoor entertaining areas and accommodation for the wedding party. It suits couples wanting a destination wedding with ocean views, space for a larger guest list and the option of keeping family and friends together on site. The estate can host up to 250 guests when booked and configured for a full-estate event. The lawns and cliff-edge areas offer flexibility for ceremonies, cocktails and outdoor receptions.

One detail to consider is the sun's position: the coastline here faces generally south, so the sun may not set directly over the ocean in front of the venue. We factor the orientation and timing into the ceremony and photography schedule.

Villa Pemutih, Pecatu

A clifftop villa overlooking the Indian Ocean, with a spacious lawn, swimming pool and tropical gardens. It suits couples planning an intimate to mid-sized wedding who want a private villa setting with ocean views and accommodation for close family or friends. The villa can host up to 75 guests for a seated dinner or 100 for a standing reception, depending on the setup. The cliff-edge garden is the natural spot for the ceremony, with the lawn and outdoor dining areas set for dinner and the reception.

Real weddings here: Summer and Lawrence · Olivia and Michael

Karang Saujana Estate, Kutuh

A clifftop estate near Pandawa Beach, set at the end of a quiet road with sweeping ocean views and a collection of private villas. It suits couples planning an intimate wedding or vow renewal who want privacy, a relaxed setting and time with their closest family and friends. The outdoor spaces offer options for a ceremony and reception overlooking the ocean, while the villas provide accommodation for guests staying together. The appeal is the sense of seclusion and the opportunity to create a personal celebration without the scale and formality of a large resort wedding.
